If a loud crash suddenly rattles the room, your shoulders jump and your breath catches before you even realize what happened.
In theatre, we train that natural reflex so you can transform any cue outside of you into powerful acting choices.

Stimulus and Impulse

A stimulus is any outside cueβ€”like a sound, a picture, or a line of textβ€”that you take in through your senses.
That trigger creates an impulse, which is the instant internal urge to move, make a sound, or speak.

Responding to Sounds and Music

Sound gives you clues through tempo (how fast or slow the beat moves) and pitch (how high or low a tone sounds).
A deep, booming drum beat pulls your center of gravity down low and invites a heavy, resonant vocal rumble.
A high, fluttering flute melody lifts your posture onto your toes and draws out light, airy vocal chirps.
Sound fills your ears, but what happens when the inspiration comes strictly from your eyes?
