Imagine your phone battery is almost completely dead — it warns you that you only have 1% left, but after a quick charge, it reaches 10%.
How do these two amounts actually compare, and how can we draw them so anyone can see the difference instantly?
What Percent Means
The word percent comes from the Latin phrase per centum, which literally means "out of one hundred."
Whenever you see the symbol %, think of a fraction with a denominator of 100.
So 1% means 1 out of 100 (rac{1}{100} or 0.01), while 10% means 10 out of 100 (rac{10}{100} = rac{1}{10} or 0.10).
How can we picture both amounts on a standard grid?
Model 1: The 10×10 Grid
A 10×10 grid has 100 equal small squares that together make one whole.
Shading just 1 single square represents 1%, while shading one full row of 10 squares represents 10%.
