Imagine five toy cars zooming down a ramp all at once. If you try to write down everything on scrap paper, your numbers will quickly become a messy jumble.
Scientists use special organizing tools called tally charts and data tables to capture numbers clearly as tests happen.
Fast Counting with Tallies
A tally chart uses quick marks to count things fast. We draw four straight lines down, and cross through them on the fifth to make a neat bundle of 5.

Tallies are great for counting things as they appear. But what if our science experiment involves measuring things like time, length, or temperature?
The Anatomy of a Science Table
A science table organizes measured numbers into neat columns and rows. The very top box of each column is called a heading.
Every heading must include two things: what you are measuring, and the unit of measurement written in parentheses.
