Have you ever looked at a digital weather screen or held a digital body thermometer when feeling sick?
Instead of waiting for colored liquid to slowly rise up a tube, a digital thermometer uses electronic sensors to show the exact temperature as numbers instantly.
How do we make sense of all the symbols and decimal dots on the screen?
Inside the Digital Display
Temperature measures how hot or cold something is, and we measure it in degrees Celsius (βC).
In 1742, Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius created this scale by setting the freezing point of water to 0βC and boiling to 100βC.

What does a reading like 37.2βC tell us about the real world?
Reading Everyday Temperatures
To read a digital display, say the whole number first, say 'point', read the tenths digit, and finish with the unit name.
For example, 37.2βC is read as thirty-seven point two degrees Celsius, which is a normal, healthy human body temperature.
