Why does leaving raw dead air on your tracks cause such a massive sonic problem?
The Cumulative Noise Floor
Every analog microphone, cable, and preamp generates a continuous background hiss known as the noise floor.
When tracks play simultaneously in your DAW, their individual noise floors sum together. For N uncorrelated noise tracks of equal level, total noise power increases according to 10log10โ(N)ย dB โ meaning 16 un-trimmed tracks boost mix noise by 12ย dB.

Trimming the Top
The top of a track includes everything before the performance starts: count-ins, throat clears, headphone bleed, and preamp hum.
A transient is the sudden, high-energy burst of sound at the start of a waveform, such as a pick striking a string or a singer's first consonant.
