Imagine watching an explosion in a crowded city street, but instead of a deafening boom, you hear only a muffled heartbeat and a high-pitched metallic ringing.
In that single second, the film shifts from an objective view of reality to point of audition (POA) β a sound design technique that locks your ears directly inside a character's head. Diegetic sound is any sound whose source exists within the fictional world of the film, but POA decides exactly who hears that world and how.

So how do filmmakers split sound between physical space and mental state?
Spatial vs. Subjective POA
Film theorist Rick Altman introduced the concept of point of audition in the 1980s to show that cinema sound is never neutral β it always suggests a listening position. POA operates in two distinct modes: spatial POA and subjective POA.
Spatial POA places the microphone at a character's physical location in the scene, so sounds get louder or softer as that character moves closer to or farther from them.
Subjective POA (often called internal diegetic sound) goes further: it modifies the sound's tone, pitch, and clarity to reflect a character's emotional trauma, sensory impairment, or focused attention.

Acoustic Perspective and Frequency Filtering
Acoustic perspective is the sense of spatial distance and environmental volume created by balancing direct sound against reflected reverberation. When editors combine acoustic perspective with frequency filtering β deliberately cutting high or low pitches using audio equalizers β they manipulate what you perceive as clear or distorted.
