Modern DAWs use non-destructive editing, meaning your edits only change playback instructions (pointers to audio files) rather than permanently altering the original audio on your drive.
Comping (short for composite tracking) is the process of selecting the best phrases from multiple recorded takes and combining them into a single master performance track.

Where should you place your cut points between takes? Splitting in the middle of a sustained vowel creates an unnatural shift in formant and pitch.
Always place your split points during natural pauses, breaths, or right before sharp consonant transients like k, t, or p, which mask the edit boundary.
What happens under the hood when you slice digital audio mid-waveform?
Zero-Crossing Edits
Digital audio samples represent electrical voltage over time; when a cut forces a high-voltage sample to instantly drop to zero, your speaker cone jumps instantaneously, producing a harsh digital click.
A zero-crossing point is the exact sample point where the oscillating waveform crosses the center baseline at zero amplitude (0ย V). Cutting exactly at a zero crossing avoids sudden voltage steps.
