The Walking Rule
To model subtraction on a number line, we use two simple steps: your start position and your movement direction.
When you subtract a positive number, you move to the left because taking away positive value makes your number smaller.

Subtracting positive numbers always moves you left. But what happens if the number you are taking away is already negative, like 2โ(โ4)?
Subtracting Negative Numbers
Think of a negative sign as meaning in reverse or opposite.
Subtraction tells you to face left, but the negative number tells you to walk backward โ which actually carries you to the right!

Removing cold makes things warmer, and removing a debt leaves you with more cash. That is why subtracting a negative moves you right.
