Partitioning Negative Counters
In math, two-color counters let us hold integers in our hands: yellow counters represent +1, and red counters represent −1.
When dividing a negative number by a positive number like −12÷3, we take 12 red counters and distribute them fairly into 3 equal groups.

Splitting counters into equal groups works great when the divisor is positive — but what happens when you divide a negative number by another negative number?
Grouping by Size (Measurement Division)
Division doesn't just mean sharing into groups — it also means asking "how many groups of this size can I make?"
For −12÷−3, we start with 12 red counters (−12) and circle sets containing 3 red counters (−3) each.
