Imagine you have 4,582 shiny stickers in a giant album, and you give away 2,000 to your school friend. Do you need to count them backwards one by one?
You do not need paper or a pencil either! You can solve this in your head in two seconds using place value.
πInteractive diagram
A four-digit number has four rooms: Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones. When we subtract a multiple of 1,000, only the thousands room changes!
Why? Because 2,000 has zero hundreds, zero tens, and zero ones, so nothing leaves those rooms.
Taking Away Thousands
Let's do 4,582β2,000 in our heads. Look right at the thousands digit, which is 4.
We know that 4β2=2, so 4 thousands take away 2 thousands leaves 2 thousands. The hundreds, tens, and ones stay exactly the same: 2,582!

What happens if we take away hundreds instead of thousands?
Taking Away Hundreds
Let's try 3,745β300. This time, our target is the hundreds digit.
There are 7 hundreds, and we take away 3 hundreds. Because 7β3=4, our new hundreds digit is 4, giving us 3,445.
