If you pick two leaves from the exact same oak branch, do you think they will be identical twins?
Even on the very same tree, no two leaves are completely identical because of variation, which means natural differences between living things.
How can we use a standard ruler to measure and prove these leaf differences?
Measuring Length and Width
To measure length, place your ruler at the very tip of the leaf and measure straight down to where the green blade meets the stalk (called the petiole).
To measure width, lay your ruler horizontally across the widest section of the flat green blade.
