Imagine finding an ink ransom note at a crime scene. To prove which suspect's pen wrote it, forensic chemists don't just look at the colorsβthey measure their movement down to the millimeter.
In paper chromatography, a liquid solvent travels up a strip of paper, separating mixtures because different substances travel at different rates.
How do scientists turn these colorful streaks into exact numbers?
The Anatomy of a Chromatogram
Every measurement starts from the baseline (or origin line), a line drawn near the bottom in pencil so graphite won't dissolve in the solvent.
The furthest point reached by the liquid solvent before removing the paper is marked immediately as the solvent front.

Notice where the zero mark on the ruler sits: we always measure from the pencil baseline, never from the physical bottom edge of the paper.

Finding the Center of the Spot
Because solute molecules spread outward through diffusion as they travel, spots widen and trail.
To keep measurements reliable and standardized, always measure to the center of the spotβthe point of highest color concentration.
