Imagine floating up into the sky like a balloon and looking down at your whole town. From way up high, streets look like long ribbons and big buildings look like tiny colorful blocks.
A community map is a flat drawing of a neighborhood or town seen from above. It helps people find places and see how to get where they want to go.
The Four Map Helpers
Every great map uses four special tools so anyone can read it easily.
The title tells what place the map shows, while the compass rose shows the four directions: North, South, East, and West.
The map legend (or key) explains the little pictures, called symbols, that stand for real buildings like hospitals, schools, and fire stations.

Finding and Drawing Routes
A route is the specific path you take to travel from one place to another. We can trace a route on a map using a dashed line and street names.
To give great directions, combine street names with compass directions, like: Walk East on Pine Street, then turn North on Maple Avenue.

A common mistake is thinking the top of a map always means 'up into the sky'. On a flat map, the top represents the direction North across the land.
