Imagine playing a 3v3 game on a mini court with a defender glued to your hipβ€”if you only run in a straight line, you will get shut down every single time.
To shake off defenders, create scoring chances, and help your teammates, you have to link different types of body movements into seamless combos.

Chaining Movements Under Pressure

A locomotor skill is any basic movement that carries your body across space, such as running, sliding, hopping, leaping, and backpedaling.
In a small-sided gameβ€”a match played on a reduced field with fewer players, like 3v3 basketball or 4v4 soccerβ€”the action is fast, so single movements are rarely enough.
When you chain movements together smoothly, you maintain your kinetic energy (the energy of motion) instead of coming to a dead stop and restarting from zero.
How do you combine these moves when your team is on offense and needs to score?

Offensive Chains: Creating Open Space

On offense, an individual goal is often creating open spaceβ€”getting separation from a defender so you can receive a pass or take a shot.
A great offensive combination is the V-cut: sprint hard toward the defender, plant your lead foot to brake, and instantly burst into an angled sprint into open territory.
Lowering your hips during the plant step lowers your center of mass, which keeps you stable and lets you push off forcefully in a new direction.
