Have you ever tried pulling a weed out of the ground? Even a tiny plant can fight back like it is superglued to the dirt!
That incredible grip is thanks to the plant's underground superpower: its root system.
Job 1: Anchorage
The first major job of roots is anchorage, which means locking the plant firmly in the soil so wind and rain cannot knock it down.
As roots grow, they branch out in every direction like hundreds of tiny underground fingers gripping the soil particles.

Job 2: Absorption
Roots also perform absorption, soaking up water and dissolved minerals from the soil like a giant underground sponge.
Dissolved minerals are tiny nutrient building blocks mixed into the soil water that plants need to stay healthy, sort of like plant vitamins.
