If you trap a baby bean sprout inside a totally dark closet, will it simply freeze and refuse to grow?
Most people guess it will stay tiny, but the real result looks like something from a science-fiction movie.
To find out what actually happens, we need to build a fair test.
Designing a Fair Test
A fair test is an experiment where you change only one thing and keep every other condition identical.
In our investigation, the only difference is light: one pot stays on a sunny windowsill, while the other sits inside a dark cardboard box.
Everything else must stay the same — identical bean seeds, the same amount of soil, the same room temperature, and the exact same amount of water poured each day.

The 7-Day Result
After one week, the plant grown in the light has a thick, sturdy stem with broad, bright green leaves.
Surprisingly, the seedling kept in the dark grows much taller, but it is thin, floppy, and has pale yellowish-white leaves.
