Imagine trying to lift a giant boulder with your bare hands. It feels impossible, but with a sturdy wooden stick and a rock, you could lift it easily!
A force is a push or a pull. A mechanism is any tool or system that takes a force you put in and changes its size, direction, or speed.

How can a simple stick let you lift something ten times heavier than you? It acts as a force multiplier.
Force Multipliers
A force multiplier is a mechanism that turns a small push into a much larger output force. It gives you extra strength to move heavy objects called loads.

To lift a 100-pound rock, you might only need to push down with 20 pounds of effort on the long end of a lever. The trade-off is distance: you must push your end down a long way to lift the heavy rock just a little bit.
You do not get free energy from a machine. You trade pushing over a longer distance to use less effort at any one moment.
Over 2,200 years ago, the Greek thinker Archimedes was so amazed by levers that he claimed: 'Give me a place to stand, and I will move the Earth!'
What if you don't need more strength, but you need to raise a flag all the way to the top of a tall pole?
Changing Direction
Some mechanisms do not make the force bigger, but they change the direction of your force. Instead of climbing to the roof and pulling upward, you can stay on the ground and pull downward.
