The speed of a chemical reaction is called its reaction rate, which measures how quickly reactants turn into products over time.
The mean rate of reaction is defined as the quantity of reactant used or product formed divided by the time taken:
Mean Rate of Reaction = Quantity of Reactant Used or Product FormedTime Taken
Depending on the experiment, this quantity can be measured in grams of mass lost, cubic centimetres (cm3) of gas produced, or moles transformed.

Converting Time to Rate
In 1850, German chemist Ludwig Wilhelmy conducted the first quantitative rate experiment, discovering that raw time alone doesn't directly equal speed without a mathematical conversion.
Because a faster reaction finishes in less time, rate is inversely proportional to time (t), which we write mathematically as rate∝t1.
