A movie chase scene and a quiet night scene feel completely different before a single melody even starts, all because of tempoβthe overall speed of the musical beat.
We measure musical speed in BPM (beats per minute), which counts how many steady pulses tick by in sixty seconds.

Before mechanical metronomes became widespread in the 1800s, Italian composers wrote expressive descriptive words at the top of the score to tell musicians exactly how fast to play.
The Tempo Spectrum
Standard Italian tempo markings form an organized ladder from the slowest, broadest strides up to an all-out sprint.

How do you tell these six markings apart when reading sheet music?
Slow to Moderate: Largo to Moderato
Largo means broad and stately, setting a very slow speed between 40 and 60 BPM.
Adagio means at ease or leisurely, moving slightly faster at 66 to 76 BPM.
Andante comes from the Italian verb andare (to walk), creating a flowing walking pace from 76 to 108 BPM.
Moderato delivers exactly what it sounds like: a moderate, medium speed ranging from 108 to 120 BPM.
