Imagine standing at a busy street corner with your eyes closed and heavy headphones over your ears. Would you feel safe stepping into the street?
Our bodies have five special tools called sensesβsight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Each sense gathers clues from around you and sends them straight to your brain.

Teamwork on the Street
When you cross a road, your sight looks for walk signals, painted crosswalk stripes, and moving cars. At the same time, your hearing listens for engines rumbling or car horns that might come from behind a corner where you cannot see yet.

By combining both senses, your brain gets a complete picture of the danger. Sight tells you what is in front of you, while hearing alerts you to things outside your field of view.
What about dangers that make no sound and cannot be seen from far away? That is where your chemical senses step in.
Smelling and Tasting Hazards
Your nose detects tiny chemical particles floating in the air. Smell can warn you of smoke from a fire, burning toast, or a gas leak long before you see any flames.
Your mouth also has tiny sensors called taste buds. They warn you if milk is spoiled by tasting sour, or if a plant might be poisonous by tasting sharp and bitter.
