When you flip a light switch on the wall, the light turns on instantly. But what actually happens inside the switch to make that happen?
Let's peek inside a wire to see how electricity moves in a loop.
The Circuit Loop
An electric circuit is a complete, unbroken loop that electricity flows through. For a light bulb to shine, electricity must travel all the way from the battery, through the bulb, and back to the battery.

Why does flipping that small switch lever have total control over the light bulb?
Opening and Closing
A switch works just like a drawbridge for electricity. When you close a switch, the metal arm drops down and connects the wires, making a complete path so electrical current can flow.
When you open a switch, the metal arm lifts up and creates an air gap. Electricity cannot travel across that gap, so the flow stops everywhere in the loop.

Does it matter where we place the switch in our simple loop?
One Break Stops Everything
In a single loop, opening the switch stops the current no matter where you put it. You can place the switch before the bulb or after the bulb, and opening it will still turn the light off.
