Would you walk up to your school principal and shout, "Hey dude, what's up?"
Probably not! You naturally change the words you choose depending on where you are and who is listening.
What is Context?
The word context means the exact situation you are in, including where you are and who you are talking to.
Just like you wear sneakers for gym class and rain boots in the mud, you pick different words to fit different situations.

So how do our words actually change when we move from the playground to the classroom?
Informal and Formal Words
We use informal language when we are relaxed around family and close friends.
We switch to formal language when we speak to teachers, community helpers, or when giving a presentation to an audience.

Let's look at how Maya asks for help in two different situations.
When building blocks with her best friend at recess, Maya says: "Hand me that red block quick!"
