Imagine you and your friend push on opposite sides of a heavy cardboard box with the exact same strength at the exact same moment.
Even though both of you are pushing as hard as you can, the box stays completely still!
Why does the box refuse to budge even when so much effort is being poured into pushing it?

What Are Balanced Forces?

A force is simply a push or a pull acting on an object, and scientists measure it in standard units called newtons (N\text{N}).
When two forces act on an object with the exact same strength but in opposite directions, we call them balanced forces.
To find out how an object will move, we calculate the net force, which is the combination of all forces acting on that object.
Because the forces point in opposite directions, they subtract from one another: 50Β Nβˆ’50Β N=0Β N50\text{ N} - 50\text{ N} = 0\text{ N}
In 1687, Isaac Newton explained in his First Law of Motion that an object resting in place will stay at rest as long as the net force is zero.
A stationary box stays still β€” but what happens if an object is already gliding when equal opposite forces push on it?
