Every time you flip a wall switch or click a flashlight, a tiny mechanical bridge moves inside the device.
An electric circuit is a complete, unbroken path that allows tiny particles of electricity, called electric current, to flow from a battery or power source to a device like a light bulb.

The Drawbridge of a Circuit
A switch acts just like a drawbridge in a road: when the bridge is down, traffic can cross, but when it is lifted up, all movement stops.
When you close a switch, the metal parts touch, making a complete loop so current flows and turns the bulb on.
When you open a switch, it creates an air gap in the wire, which instantly breaks the loop and stops the current completely.

Why do so many people get confused when science teachers talk about opening and closing a switch?

In everyday speech, an "open" store means it is working and ready for business, but in science, an open circuit means there is a gap that stops everything.
Think of a gate in a fence: when the gate is closed, the fence makes one solid ring, but when the gate is open, there is an empty hole.
