Imagine dropping 23 marbles all over the floor. Counting them one by one takes forever, and it is so easy to lose track!
What if there is a faster trick to count huge piles of objects in just a few seconds?

Make Groups of Ten

To count quickly, we make a group of ten by gathering exactly 10 loose items into one bundle.
Any items left over that do not make a full ten are called ones.
Now counting is easy! We skip-count the tens first: 10, 20, and then count on by ones: 21, 22, 23.
Can we use this same superpower on an even bigger pile of objects?

Counting Bigger Piles

Let's count a big harvest of 35 red apples by packing them into ten-frames.
We count the 3 full frames by tens: 10, 20, 30. Then we count the 5 single apples: 31, 32, 33, 34, 35.
Is it okay to make a group if we only have 8 items left?
