Imagine running outside during a heavy rainstorm with an umbrella made out of tissue paper! You would end up completely soaked in seconds because paper lets water soak right through.
Everything around us is made of materials like wood, plastic, glass, and fabric. Each material has special features that scientists call properties.
A property is any word that describes how a material looks, feels, or behaves โ like whether it is rough, smooth, stretchy, or heavy.

So how do scientists organize a big pile of messy objects by looking at just one property at a time?
Sorting by Waterproof
When a material is waterproof, water cannot pass through it and rolls right off. If a material drinks up liquid instead, we call it absorbent.
To sort objects by waterproofness, we make two groups: items that keep water out, and items that let water in.

What happens if we take a whole new set of objects and sort them by how easily they bend?
Sorting by Bendy vs. Rigid
A material is flexible (or bendy) if your hands can bend it into a curve without snapping it. If it stays stiff and holds its shape, it is rigid.
When sorting, we test each object by giving it a gentle squeeze or twist to see if it changes shape or resists.
