Imagine you just saw an awesome movie and want to tell your best friend all about it. You wouldn't repeat every single word for two hours โ you'd share the best parts in your own words!
That is what it means to retell a story. Retelling means sharing a story you read or heard using your own words, focusing only on what matters most.
So how do you know which parts to include and which ones to skip?
The 5 Key Parts
You can use your hand to remember the five main ingredients of every good retell. This trick is called the 5-finger retell.
๐Interactive diagram
First, you name the characters (who is in the story) and the setting (where and when the story takes place).
Next, you explain the problem (the main challenge) and the key events (what happens in order as characters try to solve it).
Finally, you share the solution to explain how the characters resolved the problem.
Finally, you share the solution to show how the problem was resolved.
What does this look like with a real story you might already know?
Retelling in Action
Let's retell the classic fable The Tortoise and the Hare using all five fingers.
