If you build an op-amp circuit with a gain of 100 to amplify high-frequency signals, you might find that your output voltage unexpectedly collapses to almost zero.
Op-amps cannot deliver maximum amplification across all frequencies because internal compensation limits their speed to ensure circuit stability.
The Gain-Bandwidth Trade-Off
In the 1930s, Hendrik Bode at Bell Labs studied feedback amplifiers and demonstrated that adding a controlled high-frequency roll-off prevents circuits from oscillating out of control.
An op-amp's open-loop gain (AOLโ) is its raw amplification without feedback, while the gain-bandwidth product (GBP) is the constant value representing the product of gain and frequency along the standard โ20ย dB/decade roll-off slope.
๐Create an interactive Bode magnitude plot showing op-amp open-loop response. The vertical axis is Open-Loop Gain (dB, from 0 to 100 dB), and the horizontal axis is Frequency on a logarithmic scale (10 Hz to 10 MHz). Show a horizontal line at 100 dB rolling off at 10 Hz with a distinct -20 dB/decade slope downward until it crosses 0 dB (unity gain) at f_T = 1 MHz. Highlight key labels: 'DC Open-Loop Gain A_0', 'Open-Loop Break f_b (10 Hz)', and 'Unity Gain Frequency f_T = GBP (1 MHz)'. Use a clean modern card layout with a white background (#ffffff), navy text (#1e2945), slate grid lines, and bright blue (#22b7ff) for the curve.
Because the slope falls at a constant rate, any decrease in closed-loop gain produces an equal proportional increase in available bandwidth: GBP=ACLโรfโ3dBโ
The โ3ย dB cut-off frequency (fโ3dBโ) is the upper frequency limit where the closed-loop voltage gain drops to 1/2โโ0.707 (or โ3ย dB) of its mid-band value.
How do we apply this relationship to determine the operational limit of a practical amplifier?
Calculating Non-Inverting Bandwidth
For a non-inverting op-amp configuration, the closed-loop voltage gain is ACLโ=1+R1โRfโโ, where Rfโ is the feedback resistor and R1โ connects the inverting terminal to ground.
Suppose you design an amplifier using an op-amp with a rated GBP=4ย MHz, using resistors Rfโ=39ย kฮฉ and R1โ=1ย kฮฉ.
First, calculate the closed-loop gain: ACLโ=1+1ย kฮฉ39ย kฮฉโ=40
