Imagine pulling a tiny toy car across your desk, and then trying to pull a heavy wagon full of rocks across the grass. One takes a tiny tug, while the other takes all your muscle power!
A force is simply a push or a pull that can make an object move, speed up, slow down, or change shape.

Muscles can feel the difference between a big pull and a small pull โ but how do scientists measure pulling forces with exact numbers?
Measuring Force in Newtons
We measure forces using a standard unit called the Newton, written with a capital N. In the 1600s, English scientist Sir Isaac Newton investigated how gravity pulls objects toward Earth, and scientists named this unit of force in his honor.
To picture how much force 1 N is, imagine resting a medium-sized apple on your open palm. The upward pull needed to hold that apple against gravity is almost exactly 1 Newton!

So how can we measure pulls on everyday items without guessing?
The Spring Balance Forcemeter
A forcemeter (also known as a newton meter or spring balance) is a special tool used to measure pulling forces. Inside its clear tube is a metal spring that stretches when pulled.

Because the spring stretches evenly โ twice as much force stretches it twice as far โ the pointer marks the exact strength of your pull on the printed scale.
