Every time you open a drawer, kick a ball, or zip your backpack, you are using a secret power of science.
In science, a force is simply a push or a pull acting on an object.

A push moves something away from you, while a pull brings something closer to you.
Pushes and pulls do more than just shift toys around โ what else can they make an object do?
What Forces Can Do
A force can change the motion (movement) of an object in five major ways.
In 1687, scientist Isaac Newton realized that objects only change their motion when an outside force pushes or pulls them.

A push or pull can start motion, stop motion, speed an object up, slow it down, or make it turn.
Many people think a moving ball has 'force' trapped inside it, but force is only the push or pull being applied to an object, not something stored inside.
