If you look at the integers 3 and 4, there is no other integer trapped between them. But what happens if you look at fractions?
A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction baโ, where a and b are integers and b๎ =0.
๐Interactive/animated diagram illustrating the concept of rational numbers between two endpoints on a number line. At the top, show integer markers 0 and 1. An animated magnifying glass zooms into the interval between 0 and 1 to reveal fractions 1/4, 2/4, 3/4. Then it zooms further into the gap between 1/4 and 2/4 to reveal even smaller fractions like 3/8. How can you reliably find a specific rational number tucked neatly between any two given numbers?
The Midpoint Method
The most direct way to find a number between any two numbers a and b is to find their arithmetic mean, which sits exactly halfway between them.
To find a rational number between 41โ and 21โ, add them together and divide by 2: Midpoint=241โ+42โโ=243โโ=83โ
๐A step-by-step diagram of the Midpoint Method on a horizontal number line from 0 to 1. Marker at 1/4 (labeled 2/8) colored in blue (#2563eb), marker at 1/2 (labeled 4/8) colored in blue. An animated bracket arcs between them meeting at the midpoint 3/8, highlighted with a glowing coral marker (#f43f5e). Below the line, show the math step: (1/4 + 1/2)/2 = 3/8. What if you need to find five or ten rational numbers at once without doing repeated division?
Scaling Denominators
When fractions look consecutiveโlike 52โ and 53โโyou can create space between them by finding equivalent fractions with larger denominators.
Multiply the numerator and denominator of both fractions by 10 to get 5020โ and 5030โ. Now you can easily pick numbers like 5021โ,5023โ, or 5029โ.

Below, a magnified number line segment shows 20/50 on the left and 30/50 on the right, with selectable tick marks 21/50, 22/50, 23/50, ..., 29/50 appearing in between.
