Imagine you are a detective solving a mystery. You cannot just guess who took the cookies β€” you need real clues!
When you read a story, the proof is the exact words on the page that show your answer is correct.
How do you track down those proof words when a page is full of sentences? Let's test our detective skills on a story about a puppy.

Finding the Clue Words

First, look at the question and pick out the most important clue words to search for in the story.
Read this short story: 'Pip the puppy dashed outside. He splashed into a giant mud puddle. His fluffy white paws turned dark brown!'
A common mistake is answering with your own imagination, like saying Pip splashed in a bathtub because dogs take baths at home.
Good readers only use what is written right on the page, not what they guess in their head.
What if a question asks why something happened instead of where? Can we still point right to the sentence?

Pointing to the Proof

To prove your answer, put your finger right on the sentence and read it aloud.
