Close your eyes and imagine petting a fluffy kitten, and then touching a prickly pinecone.
Your fingers can tell right away that they feel completely different!

What is Texture?

In art and nature, texture is the way something feels when you touch it, or how it looks like it would feel.
Things can be rough like tree bark, smooth like a glass window, soft like a warm blanket, or bumpy like a sidewalk.
You can explore texture with your fingertips, but your eyes can also spot textures from far away.
But what happens when an object isn't just flat on a page, and you can hold it in your hands?

Shapes vs. Forms

A flat drawing of a circle or square on paper is a shape.
A form is a three-dimensional object that is solid and takes up space, so you can walk all the way around it or hold it.
A flat circle becomes a sphere like a basketball, and a flat square becomes a cube like a building block.
