Imagine sharing a $1 bill equally among 5 friends. How much money does each person get?
Each friend gets 20 cents, or $0.20! That means the fraction 51β is worth exactly the same as the decimal 0.2.
The Power of Ten
Our decimal system is built on powers of 10: tenths (101β), hundredths (1001β), and thousandths (10001β).
To change any fraction into a decimal, we can rewrite it with a denominator of 10, 100, or 1000.

Because 5Γ2=10, we multiply the top and bottom of 51β by 2 to get 102β, which is written as 0.2.
Counting by Fifths
Once you know that 51β=0.2, finding every other fifth is just counting up by 0.2.
πInteractive diagram
For example, 53β is 3 groups of 0.2, which equals 0.6 (or 106β).
What happens when you cut something into 8 equal pieces instead? You can't multiply 8 by a whole number to get 10 or 100!
