Imagine you crack a big mystery, but your detective partner asks: "How do you know for sure?"
In math, getting the right number is only half the job. To justify your answer, you have to explain why your math makes sense.
How do we build an explanation that anyone can follow?
The 3 Parts of an Explanation
A rock-solid mathematical explanation answers three simple questions for every move you make.

Let's put this three-part tool to work on a real story problem.
A Worked Example
Mia buys 4 packs of stickers with 6 stickers in each pack. Then, she gives 5 stickers to Leo. How many stickers does Mia have left?
First, we write: "I multiplied 4Γ6=24 because Mia has 4 equal groups of 6, which gives 24 stickers in total."
Next, we write: "Then, I subtracted 24β5=19 because giving stickers away removes them from her total, leaving her with 19 stickers."
