Imagine you have a big jar of 43 bouncy balls. Counting them one by one takes forever, but grouping them into bags of 10 makes it super fast!
When we pull a number apart to show the value of each digit, we write it in expanded form.
How do you know what each digit inside a number is really worth?

Tens and Ones

In every two-digit number, the digit on the left tells you the tens, and the digit on the right tells you the ones.
For the number 68, the digit 6 means 6 tens, which equals 60. The digit 8 means 8 ones, which equals 8.
A common trap is writing 68=6+868 = 6 + 8. But 6+86 + 8 is only 14, not 68!
Always remember that the first digit is counting groups of ten, so 6 tens must be written as 60.
What happens when a two-digit number ends in a zero, like 50?

Numbers Ending in Zero

When there are no loose ones, the ones digit is 0.
