If an experiment gives results completely opposite to what you predicted, did your experiment fail, or did it succeed?
In science, an unexpected result is still a valid result because data does not exist to flatter our guesses โ it exists to test them.
The Evaluation Framework
A hypothesis is a testable proposed explanation for an observation, while a prediction is the specific measurable outcome you expect if that hypothesis is correct.
When you compare your measured results against your prediction, your data will either support the hypothesis (aligns with the prediction) or refute it (contradicts the prediction).

How do you turn raw experimental measurements into a clear, exam-ready evaluation statement?
Case 1: When Data Supports a Hypothesis
Suppose a student hypothesizes that increasing reactant concentration increases reaction rate because more solute particles lead to more frequent collisions per second.
Their prediction states that doubling hydrochloric acid concentration from 0.5ย M to 1.0ย M will approximately double the rate of hydrogen gas production.

To write a complete evaluation, state your verdict clearly and cite exact numbers: 'The data supports the hypothesis because doubling the acid concentration from 0.5ย M to 1.0ย M increased the rate from 14.8ย mL/min to 30.2ย mL/min, an increase of 104%.'
Always calculate a difference, ratio, or percentage change rather than just stating that the values increased.
