If a square floor tile has an area of 0.0064Β m2, how long is each edge?
Finding that edge means undoing a power, and the operation that reverses an exponent is called a radical.
Parts of a Radical
Every radical expression has two key parts: the radicand (the value trapped under the root symbol) and the index (the small integer indicating which power we are reversing).
When no index is written, it represents an implied square root with an index of 2. The radical symbol xβ denotes only the non-negative principal square root of xβ₯0, such that (xβ)2=x.
πCreate an interactive visual diagram explaining radical anatomy. Show \sqrt[n]{a} in large font with clear colored callouts pointing to 'Index (n)', 'Radical Symbol (\sqrt{})', and 'Radicand (a)'. Below it, provide two side-by-side comparative cards: (1) Square Root (Index 2 implied): area of a square = 49 -> side = 7, (2) Cube Root (Index 3): volume of a cube = 64 -> edge = 4. Use responsive layout (min 320px, max 600px), card background #ffffff, border #e6e6e6, dark navy text #1e2945, accent blue #2563eb, teal #0d9488.
While the equation x2=49 has two roots (x=7 and x=β7), the radical expression 49β uniquely equals 7 because it asks only for the non-negative root.
Odd roots like cube roots are different: since (β4)Γ(β4)Γ(β4)=β64, we can evaluate 3β64β=β4 directly in the real numbers.
How do we handle radicals when the radicand is not a whole number, but a fraction?
Roots of Fractions
By the Quotient Property of radicals, roots of fractions are evaluated by taking the root of the numerator and denominator independently: baββ=bβaββ and 3baββ=3bβ3aββ for positive integers a and b.
πCreate a step-by-step interactive breakdown card demonstrating the quotient property of roots. Show Step 1: \sqrt{\frac{49}{144}}, Step 2 (Split): \frac{\sqrt{49}}{\sqrt{144}}, Step 3 (Evaluate): \frac{7}{12}. Beside it, show a cube root example: \sqrt[3]{-\frac{27}{125}} -> \frac{\sqrt[3]{-27}}{\sqrt[3]{125}} = -\frac{3}{5}. Include clickable toggle buttons to see each step highlighted with clean animations. Responsive, text color #1e2945, border #e6e6e6, accent #2563eb.
A common mistake is trying to split radicals across addition or subtraction like a+bβ=aβ+bβ, which is false; radicals only distribute cleanly over multiplication and division.
