Have you ever mixed a track that sounded punchy and full on your monitors, only for it to sound thin, hollow, or harsh when played at a quiet volume?
That mix mystery happens because the human ear does not hear all frequencies equally at different volume levels.
The Equal-Loudness Principle
In 1933, Bell Labs researchers Harvey Fletcher and Wilden A. Munson discovered that our ears perceive frequency balance differently depending on how loud the sound is.
An equal-loudness contour is a plotted curve showing the physical sound pressure level in decibels sound pressure level (dB SPL) required for pure tones to sound equally loud across the entire human hearing range.

Our ear canal naturally resonates between 2 kHz and 5 kHz, making us most sensitive to mid-range frequencies where human speech and baby cries live.
At low volumes, your ears drastically roll off sub-bass and extreme treble, requiring far more physical acoustic energy just to hear low frequencies at the same perceived loudness.
So what happens to your mix when you turn your monitor knob up or down?
Monitoring Levels Shift Your Perception
When you turn your monitor volume way up, the equal-loudness curves flatten out, meaning you hear sub-bass and high frequencies much more easily.
However, this creates a dangerous trap: loud monitoring tricks your brain into thinking a kick drum has deep sub-weight and presence, even if the mix is actually hollow and weak.
