When you look up at the sky, the Sun and the Moon look like they are the exact same size. But in real life, one of them could swallow more than a million of the other!
How do these three neighbors — Earth, the Sun, and the Moon — actually fit together in space?
Sizes and Distances
The Sun is a giant star at the center of our neighborhood, huge enough to fit about 1.3 million Earths inside it.
The Moon is our closest rocky neighbor, and it is much smaller than Earth — you could fit about 50 Moons inside our planet.

So if the Moon is so tiny, how do these three objects move around one another?
Who Moves Around Whom?
An orbit is the repeating path an object takes in space around a larger object.
Earth travels in a large orbit around the Sun, while the Moon travels in a smaller orbit around Earth.

It takes Earth about 365 days (one full year) to complete one trip around the Sun.
Meanwhile, the Moon circles Earth in just about 27 days, which is roughly one month.
