Imagine you have 221β cups of flour, and each mini muffin recipe needs 41β of a cup. How many batches can you bake?
πInteractive diagram
Counting the pieces gives 10 batches. But how do we solve this using math every single time?
Step 1: Convert to an Improper Fraction
A mixed number combines a whole number with a fraction, like 221β. An improper fraction is a fraction where the top number is equal to or larger than the bottom number, like 25β.
To convert, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator: 2Γ2+1=5, giving 25β.

Why does this work? Each whole cup contains 2 halves, so 2 whole cups contain 2Γ2=4 halves, plus the extra half makes 5 halves total.
Now that we have clean fractions, how do we divide them?
Step 2: Multiply by the Reciprocal
Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal β which just means flipping the numerator and denominator.

This confirms our visual: 25βΓ14β=220β=10 batches.
