Imagine plotting a line graph of shoe color against running speed โ connecting red shoes to blue shoes with a continuous slope.
That line would falsely claim that a "half-red, half-blue" shoe value exists at every point in between. Choosing the wrong graph ruins scientific communication.
To pick the right visual every time on your exams, you only need to classify your data into three basic categories.
The Three Data Types
A variable is any biological or physical quantity that can change or be measured. In science experiments, variables fall into categoric, discrete, or continuous data.

Categoric data consists of qualitative descriptors or group names, such as eye color, type of metal, or breed of dog, with no inherent numerical scale.
Discrete data consists of numerical values that can only take specific, isolated values โ usually whole numbers from counting, like the number of bacterial colonies in a dish or shoe size.
Continuous data comes from measurements along an unbroken scale and can take any numerical value within a range, such as 14.28ย s of time, 62.5ย kg of mass, or 37.1โC of temperature.
How do these distinctions dictate whether our bars should touch, stay separated, or turn into continuous lines?
Choosing the Right Graph
The type of independent variable (what you change) and dependent variable (what you measure) determines the correct chart format.
