If you shine a flashlight at an apple, the apple doesn't start glowing in the dark once you switch the flashlight off.
Yet one of the most common science exam mistakes is assuming that anything exposed to nuclear radiation becomes radioactive itself.
To master radiation safety, you must understand the critical difference between irradiation and radioactive contamination.
Irradiation: Exposure to Radiation
Irradiation occurs when an object is exposed to ionizing radiation coming from an external source.
During irradiation, radiation waves or particles travel through the object, but the radioactive material itself never touches it.

The key rule of irradiation: the irradiated object does not become radioactive.
As soon as you move away from the source or turn it off, the exposure stops instantly.

Radioactive contamination happens when unwanted radioactive atoms (isotopes) get onto or inside an object or person.
A radioactive isotope is an unstable atom that releases energy by emitting ionizing particles as it decays.
