If you look closely at a bright flower like a lily or a tulip, it is not just decoration. It is a tiny, perfectly organized factory built to make new plant seeds.
To see how it works, scientists perform a dissection, which means carefully taking the flower apart piece by piece, from the outside ring to the very center.
What is the very first protective layer you touch on the outside of a flower?
The Outer Layers: Sepals and Petals
The outermost ring is made of sepals, which are small, leaf-like parts that wrapped around the flower bud to protect it before it opened.
Just inside the sepals are the petals. These are often brightly colored and scented like perfume to attract hungry pollinators like bees and butterflies.

The Male Parts: The Stamen

Each stamen has two parts: a thin stem called the filament, and a powdery knob at the top called the anther, which makes yellow dust called pollen.
