If a bottle of spring water is labeled 100% pure, a chemist would actually tell you the label is completely false.
In everyday speech, "pure" means clean and natural, but in chemistry, purity has a strict, mathematical meaning.
So what does a chemist mean by pure, and why is the water from your kitchen tap not chemically pure at all?
Chemically Pure Water
Chemically pure water contains only one single compound: H2βO molecules, with zero dissolved salts, minerals, or gases.
Because pure substances have fixed physical properties, pure water melts at exactly 0βC and boils at exactly 100βC at standard atmospheric pressure (1Β atm).

What Makes Water Potable?
Potable water is water that is safe for humans to drink over a lifetime without health risks.
Potable water is not pure H2βO; it is a mixture containing low levels of dissolved salts and safely low or zero levels of harmful microbes (bacteria and viruses), with a balanced pH between 6.5 and 8.5.
