Glucose is the fuel powering your brain, while ethanoic acid gives vinegar its sharp punch. Even though they behave completely differently, both share the exact same atomic recipe of 1 carbon to 2 hydrogens to 1 oxygen.
How can two totally different chemicals share the same fundamental recipe? The answer lies in how chemists count atoms versus how they describe proportions.
The Actual Molecule vs. The Simplest Recipe
A molecular formula tells you the actual, exact number of atoms of each element bonded inside a single molecule.
An empirical formula tells you only the simplest whole-number ratio of the elements in that compound.

So how do we mathematically convert any molecular formula into its empirical formula?
Simplifying to Empirical Formulas
To find an empirical formula, divide all the subscripts in the molecular formula by their greatest common factor (the largest whole number that divides into all of them evenly).
For example, butane has the molecular formula C4βH10β. Dividing both subscripts by 2 gives the empirical formula C2βH5β.
