When stomach acid causes painful heartburn, you swallow an antacid tablet to cancel out the burning acid.
Any substance that chemically cancels out or neutralizes an acid is called a base.
So what actually makes a substance a base, and how does it react with an acid?
What Is a Base?
In 1754, French chemist Guillaume-FranΓ§ois Rouelle coined the term base to describe solid substances that serve as a foundation, reacting with liquid acids to form neutral crystals called salts.
A base is chemically defined as any substance that reacts with an acid to produce a salt and water.

Most bases are metal oxides (like copper oxide, CuO), metal hydroxides, or metal carbonates.
If you stir different bases into water, a big difference appears β some dissolve easily, while others just sit at the bottom. What do we call the ones that dissolve?
Bases vs. Alkalis
An alkali is simply a base that dissolves in water β in other words, a soluble base.
When an alkali dissolves in water, it releases hydroxide ions (OHβ), which give the resulting solution a pH greater than 7.
