Imagine spending two hours dialing in vocal rides, only to hit play and accidentally wipe out every volume move across the entire track in three seconds.
In any Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), automation is the recorded instructions that tell parametersβlike volume faders, pan pots, and filter cutoffsβto move automatically over time.
To control how and when your fader moves get written into the timeline, DAWs use dedicated automation modes.
Why do basic playback and recording modes behave so differently on an automation lane?
Read vs. Write: Playback and Overwrite
Read mode plays back existing automation curves without recording any new moves, locking your parameters to the timeline data.
Write mode acts like a steamroller: it records the current fader position continuously across the entire timeline, completely erasing any pre-existing automation as long as playback is running.

Because Write mode overwrites everything even when you are not actively moving the control, most engineers only use it for a track's very first initial pass.
What if you already have great automation and only need to fix a single vocal phrase?
Punching In: Touch vs. Latch
Touch mode only writes new data while you actively hold or click the fader; the instant you release it, the parameter snaps back to the underlying curve over a brief glide time.
Latch mode also starts writing the moment you touch the control, but when you let go, it continues writing at the last held value until playback stops.
