Every song you love is built from tiny pieces of sound and silence snapped together like toy blocks.
A rhythm pattern is a repeating line of short sounds, long sounds, and quiet pauses that make you want to dance.
Before you build your own pattern, let's meet the three rhythm blocks you can choose from.
πInteractive diagram
A quarter note gets one steady sound per beat, and we say "ta" when we clap it.
Paired eighth notes squeeze two even sounds into that same single beat, so we say "ti-ti" twice as fast.
A quarter rest is one full beat of complete silence where you keep the beat in your head and say "shh."
What happens when we line up four steady beats and fill each box with one of these blocks?
Building a 4-Beat Pattern
To compose your rhythm, draw four equal boxes in a row, with each box representing one steady pulse of your heartbeat.
Now pick one rhythm piece for each box to make a brand-new 4-beat tune.
