Imagine dumping a messy bin of toy cars and teddy bears onto the floor. How can you organize them fast so you know how many of each you have?
A T-chart is a simple chart with two columns that looks just like the capital letter T. It helps us sort items into two separate groups.
What happens when we collect items on the playground and want to put them in our chart?

Building a T-Chart

Let's sort playground items: we find 5 soccer balls and 3 jump ropes. We write each item into its matching column using tally marks or numbers.
To keep our data accurate, we cross off each real item as we record it. That makes sure no item gets counted twice!
Now that our items are organized, how do we use this chart to answer math questions?

Reading and Comparing

We compare two groups by looking at which column has more items and which has fewer. We subtract the smaller number from the bigger number to find the difference.
Be careful: a common mistake is adding the two sides when a question asks how many more. Adding gives the total, but subtracting gives how many more.
